Mobile, AL

Today, Mobile, Alabama is one of the largest ports in the United States with a population of over 200,000 residents. However, despite its economic importance today, the city had humble beginnings along the Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff on the Mobile River. The settlement of Mobile was founded by Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, in 1702 to establish control over the La Louisiane territory.

In 1711, the settlement was relocated due to a spike in diseases and flooding. The city would change flags several times during the 1700s as the British would gain the colony in 1763 after the Seven Years War and the United States would seize the colony during the War of 1812. By 1819, Alabama gained statehood and Mobile grew as a trading center. The port of Mobile began to grow exponentially as steamboats increased transportation. The city continued to grow as the Industrial Revolution created cotton shortages, inspiring southern farmers. By 1850, Mobile attracted businessmen from around the world looking to purchase cotton, being only second to New Orleans in cotton exports.

During the American Civil War, Mobile suffered great losses as loved ones were lost and exports slowed. However, the city came back during the Progressive Era as new industries opened, generating new job opportunities. The city would only continue to grow from War World II into what it is today.
